Recently more attention has been dedicated to the impact that academic research can and should have outside academia. This is especially the case as more students are encouraged to pursue socially impactful research capable of influencing key policymaking. Despite this, universities offer relatively little training and guidance for how to navigate the space outside of academia or reach these key decision-makers. As a result, most researchers and students struggle with how to translate their research (findings) into non-academic outputs like policy briefs.
Recognising the existing need within the academic community, the European Careers Association (ECA), and 89 Netherlands (89NL) (together with Studio Europa Maastricht (SEM)) put together this event, designed to be an introduction to policy briefs for academics across the spectrum, from (BA and MA) students and early-career researchers (e.g. PhD’s) to experienced researchers. During the event, we will answer questions like What is a policy brief? How does writing style/language differ from other forms of publications? and more!
Speakers include Julia Walczyk, a UM alumnus, research officer and contributor to the SEM policy brief series; Laura De Rosa and Rana Orhan, research officers on the 89NL Democracy team and former policy advisors; and Prof. Serdar Türkeli, Research Director for the 89 Netherlands Climate programme and lecturer and coordinator at UNU-MERIT. Join us on the 11th of February on Zoom!
