ECA x Council of Europe Special Event: Data Protection in Europe

The ECA has the pleasure to organize the event "Data protection in Europe" in cooperation with the Council of Europe.

On the 10th of May at 18:00, we will have the pleasure to welcome you to an event introducing the topic of data protection across the European continent. We are delighted to welcome two very special guests, representing the Council of Europe and the European Union, to share the developments at their respective organisations:

Ms Sophie Kwasny, Head of the Data Protection Unit of the Council of Europe. Ms Kwasny has been working for the Council of Europe for 20 years, dealing with a variety of topics, ranging from prisons’ reforms to medical insurance, or from the independence of the judiciary to nationality law.

Mr Olivier Matter, Team Leader for International Cooperation at the European Data Protection Supervisor. Mr Matter has previous experience working for the Council of Europe, as well as for the European Union.

Our guest speakers will provide us with an overview of the data protection from two perspectives. First, they will present how these two organisations have cooperated and influenced each other to create their respective data protection frameworks. In this context, the EU's General Data Protection Regulation will be discussed, and compared with the CoE Convention 108, that was the original basis used for the first EU directive on data protection, adopted in 1995. The convention was modernized in 2018, leading to the "108+". Take this opportunity to discover these legal instruments and their interrelation!

Secondly, our guests will also talk about current issues in data protection, most importantly in the context of COVID-19 pandemic. The flagship example of a contemporary issue that the two institutions have to tackle are the "COVID passports", such as the proposed EU Digital Green Certificate. Furthermore, career opportunities and paths related to data protection at the two international institutions will be presented.
The event will be rounded of by a Q&A at the end where our guests will answer your questions.
